Individually configurable power supplies

The advantages of modular vs standard power supplies in industrial and medical environments

A single, configurable power supply with several outputs saves space, reduces costs, and simplifies implementation. At the same time, it meets the stringent requirements of leakage current.

The problem

In recent years, electronic products in industrial and medical environments have developed at a rapid pace. They are becoming increasingly diverse and complex, and this is coupled with miniaturisation and customers’ desires for low prices. The products are assembled from a wide range of components – motors, controls, sensors, displays, etc. – and as a rule, all of these different components are driven by different DC voltages, meaning several AC/DC power supplies are required to supply the necessary power. This frequently leads to equipment being unable to meet the safety regulations for leakage current – 500 - 750µA for medical applications and 3.5mA for industrial applications – because this is calculated as the sum of the individual leakage currents of each of the AC/DC power supplies in use.

The solution

An elegant solution is to use a single AC/DC power supply with one front end and several outputs. The outputs can be configured to meet the voltage and power requirements of the peripherals. MEAN WELL produces two such series, each with a modular design to ensure flexibility across various fields of application.

The UMP-400 series is a low-profile (1HU) modular power supply. It is supplied with a single output rail with either 24V or 48V as standard. However, by integrating DC/DC converter module cards from the NID35/65/100 series into the UMP-400 front end, up to four outputs – depending on the customer’s needs – are possible, each adaptable to the requirements of different machines, devices, and applications.

The NMP650 and NMP1K2 series have been specially developed for industrial and medical purposes. Depending on the series, they offer four (NMP650) or six (NMP1K2) independent output module slots, as well as an extremely wide output voltage range from 3.3 to 55VDC. Users can set and adjust the output voltage and current to suit their requirements. The NMP series also feature intelligent control functions, such as voltage and current control, remote power on/off for individual modules or the complete system, and an over-temperature warning and DC OK signal, enabling remote control and monitoring applications.

With a low leakage current of <100µA, NMP series complies with medical safety regulation EN 60601-1 and is also certified in accordance with EN 62368-1 for industrial and ITE applications. The multiple functions and high quality make the series an excellent choice for many applications involving medical equipment, diagnostic and biological facilities, testing and measurement systems, and telecommunications and laser equipment. The NMP series is now available from Schukat with a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Advantages of using modular power supplies

• Modular power supplies meet stringent leakage current requirements, also when powering multiple peripheral components.

Wide control range with programmable output voltage and current.

Highly precise output voltage: ±0,5 %. This meets the voltage accuracy requirements of most electronic devices.

• A custom-configured build using the new NMD-240 dual-output modules in combination with the NMP1K2 front end results in a maximum of 12 output rails.

• The individually configurable NMP650 and NMP1K2 front ends combined with NMS-240 and NMD-240 output modules and other accessories allow a range of series and parallel connections of the output modules, ensuring the highest degree of flexibility for applications with multiple operating voltages.

Intelligent control functions also make remote control and monitoring applications possible,

• Using a single power supply enables designs with a small form factor.

• Implementing a single, configurable power supply simplifies the AC input wiring, with corresponding reductions in electromagnetic interference (EMI) in the equipment. The number of EMI filters that may need to be used can therefore be reduced.

High power density in a compact 1HU case: fan speed is automatically adjusted with the internal temperature detection function to ensure the best possible thermal management.
