How does low-corrosion marking work with 8404 Aerospace Marker from edding?

Schukat explains the advantages of low-corrosion marking with the 8404 Aerospace Marker from edding for industry.

Schukat supplies a range of special markers specially tailored to the requirements of industry, trade and health care. In addition to the well-known permanent markers and highlighters, the Schukat range thus also includes application-specific products such as aerospace, UV, cleanroom and cable markers, and carpenter's pens.

Risks when marking metal

In many industries, there is a demand for low-corrosion, wear-resistant marking. But what exactly is corrosion? Corrosion describes the decomposition of a metal caused by the interaction between it and its environment. This phenomenon gradually leads to the formation of rust. The aim, therefore, is to prevent corrosion in order to eliminate the risk of decay of the metal. In some industries, even the slightest sign of corrosion can be highly significant and pose a significant risk to health and safety. In such industries, low-corrosion tools and materials therefore have a preventive function and are certified according to industry norms and standards. As yet, there is no international guideline for low-corrosion markers; edding therefore uses DIN 25493. By using this standard, edding aims to prevent material damage, such as corrosive cracking on metallic surfaces, by providing specifications for the ink used in their markers. Halogens (chlorine, bromine, fluorine and iodine) and sulphur in markers can increase the risk of corrosion on stainless steel and other metal alloys.

Simple marking without damaging components: low-corrosion ink as a solution

Unlike the ink in standard markers, the low-corrosion ink in the edding 8404 aerospace marker has a low halogen and sulphur content. The marker's name originates from its being tested by British Aerospace Airbus Ltd. in accordance with the ABP 9-3323 standard, Class A. The edding 8404 Aerospace Marker allows permanent but low-corrosion writing on surfaces. This marker represents a reliable, quick and inexpensive alternative to other marking methods such as lasers or scribing and does not damage the component being marked. With the right solvent, if necessary, the water-based pigment ink can also be removed. A typical application is the marking of stainless steel: when identifying a semi-finished product, setting drill points, or transferring information, for example. The edding 8404 aerospace marker can also be used to mark sensitive materials such as PCBs with ease, as the extra-fine 0.75 mm bullet tip will not scratch the sensitive surface of the circuit board, and can mark almost all materials (e.g. plastic, metal and rubber) permanently without any risk of corrosion. The water-based pigment ink of the aerospace marker is also lightfast, quick-drying, waterproof and wear-resistant, and also resistant to many solvents and paints. It does not contain any added xylene or toluene. This high-quality, "made in Germany" brand-name product features the classic, functional edding design. The practical clip prevents the marker from rolling away and can be used to fasten it to clothing, and the cap can be stored at the end of the barrel to prevent loss during use. The edding 8404 aerospace marker is now available in black from Schukat.
