Sustainability and cost savings with the spare parts for KNIPEX stripping pliers and stripping tools

Schukat explains how to get the longest life out of your KNIPEX tools, and save money at the same time.

Professional tradespeople need long-lasting tools that work consistently well, regardless of how often they are used. As well as professional handling, storage and care, cost-effective spare parts also play an important role in maximising the life of tools.

Background

Whenever standardised, consistent wire stripping is called for, classical strippers deliver a valuable service. A high degree of tool utility paired with safety and ease of use are the result of decades of manufacturing experience, ongoing development based on user feedback, and high quality standards. Even when wire strippers are chromed to protect them from corrosion and designed for long service life, it is still possible to lose the screw or for it to wear out.
Among the main factors affecting the durability of wire strippers’ springs are spring creep and fatigue. Spring creep causes the spring to wear and lose length because it is subject to constant loading. This phenomenon is additionally affected by various factors, including the materials used, ambient temperature, and the duration of the loading. Fatigue, by comparison, can lead to spring breakage, and occurs when the metal is subject to pulsing tension below the yielding point of the metal. Fatigue is influenced mostly by material characteristics, existing corrosion, and temperature. It is therefore all the more important for parts exposed to wear and tear, like the compression spring or leg spring, to be replaceable.

Solution

KNIPEX pliers are designed for years of service, so the wearing down of some components is to be expected. In this regard, KNIPEX offers a range of spare parts grown from decades of know-how in application and manufacturing:

The KNIP110901 spare parts kit, comprising a knurled screw and washer, has been designed for their KNIP1102-160 and KNIP1106-160 universal wire strippers with opening spring. The knurled screw allows the strippers to be adjusted to suit the conductor cross section, ensuring that only the insulation is cut and the conductor itself remains undamaged. To maintain precise adjustment even when working for long periods, the knurled screw is secured using the locknut mounted on the inside. With this set, loss of the screw or wear and tear means buying new wire strippers is unnecessary, and the existing tool can again be adjusted to suit the conductor cross section.

To change the clamping jaws for the KNIP1240-200 and KNIP1250-200 self-adjusting insulation stripper, the worn jaws can be removed using a small screwdriver and the KNIP125902 and KNIP124902 spare clamping jaws positioned so that the protruding part is at the front.

With the KNIP1240-200 wire strippers, the length to be stripped is adjusted by pressing together and moving the length stop. This stop can be replaced with the KNIP1249-03 spare length stop. For optimal long-term removal of the insulation layer, the stripping blade is replaceable for both self-adjusting insulation stripper models.

The KNIP124905 compression springs and KNIP124904 leg springs are also replaceable, to counteract spring creep and fatigue in the insulation strippers.

► KNIPEX tip!

Caring for your tools - for example, by regularly oiling the joints and sliding surfaces, and greasing the pull rods - makes a further contribution to long-term sustainability by extending the life cycle of the tools. Lubricating the wire strippers can be done with any standard industrial oil.
