MEAN WELL and Schukat: a Very Special Fundraising Campaign

Our Success Creates Basis for Manufacturer’s Large Donation Fund

The boom in demand for electronic components, accompanied as it was by a severe shortage of materials, is coming to an end. In the Asian markets in particular, as a result of the reverberating effects of the Covid-19 epidemic, the Ukraine-Russia war, and inflation in various countries, a strong sense of restraint is palpable. Manufacturer MEAN WELL decided to counteract this restraint with a special budget for its distributors. What makes the budget special is that the calculated sum is based on the increase in sales achieved by the distributor from 2021 to 2022. One part of the special budget goes towards marketing activities and other promotional measures aimed at mitigating the effects of declining supply chain demand, while the other part goes to regional organizations recommended by the distributor

True to the good intentions embodied in the name “MEAN WELL,” the manufacturer, together with its distributors, decided to donate most of the available special budget to those dependent on external support, similar to a fundraising campaign in 2021. As the biggest MEAN WELL distributor in Europe, Schukat generated record turnover in 2022 – and thus created the basis for a very large donation fund, to which MEAN WELL contributed USD $445,000.
With this generous budget, Schukat has been able not only to support the positive development of the MEAN WELL brand, but both companies – in addition to their own sponsored social projects – have jointly been able to fulfil their social responsibilities. The distributor decided to donate the budget to regional organizations in accordance with the United Nations' sustainability goals (SDG, or Social Development Goals), to which MEAN WELL also subscribes.
In this way, many SDG sustainability goals can be supported, from poverty reduction and WASH projects for clean drinking water to projects providing medical care for the homeless and socially disadvantaged, those with no health insurance cover. In the end, the US $445,000 donation budget was exchanged for euros and distributed to seven different organisations. With the final donation of €63,000 to the Monheim Climate Forest, the funding marathon finished on a high note: because of the generous donation, which will go towards the reforestation of around 1500 trees in the Colombian rainforest, the city of Monheim organised a symbolic regional “reforestation.” For every €500 donated, Monheim donated a tree to be planted locally in a public open space. Alongside the city, Schukat employees planted 126 trees and thus, on behalf of MEAN WELL, could set an example for nature conservation – another of the UN social development goals, naturally.

Schukat electronic and the recipients of donations (the SKFM and its food bank in Monheim; CAYA e.V. in Cologne; Tornisforst-based medical organisation action medeor; NABU NRW in Düsseldorf; the Sielmann Foundation in Duderstadt; the climate forest project in Monheim; and the brothers of the Taizé Community in Brazil) would like to thank Jerry Lin, founder of MEAN WELL, for this extraordinary and generous campaign.
